Should I Friend My Boss on Facebook?

Should I Friend My Boss on Facebook?
The Tulsa Young Professionals asked me to speak at one of their LED (Leadership, Education, Development) series meetings.  The topic was Social Media.
The fun topic was:  “Should I friend my boss on facebook.”

I answered the question with a ‘NO… but.’   I tried to share the concept of social marketing, creating a social media strategy, and the need for personal branding.
On the question of friending your boss, I don’t think you should be obligated to friend or follow anyone.   It may say Facebook, but this is MY space is something I always say about my profile page.
There are so many other options (channels) than Facebook to showcase your expertise and or your passion in life.
Explore social networking and enjoy.

I don’t think there is a blanket answer for this. You aren’t obligated to friend someone but the reverse is also true, you aren’t obligated to NOT friend someone. Each situation is unique, do what works for you.

Very true Kara. Most people started their Facebook page as a way to connect with friends and family. As more and more people join FB, the since of obligation is a tough one for many.
